Here's part of the reason why I've been "offline" for the past 8 days or so. I've been working non-stop with all kinds of projects and today I could finally press the LAUNCH-button and initiate one of those projects. Our latest Peugeot summer campaign site with great cars as well as a small Flash game to get you cooled off.

Is that a Jeffrey Zeldman backtrack?

0 comment on this post »

On June 8th our friend Mr. Zeldman obviously decided to write an insufficient article on the subject of HTML e-mails. This rather hostile article towards the media as a positive form of communication resulted in numerous responses on numerous websites, such as Campaign Monitor, where I left my own personal mark filed under "Mads Frederiksen" (we'll get back to that later), Email Marketing Reports as well as here on Playgrounds.dk, where I wrote a little something on the issue as well.

Now it seems that Jeff has taken on the critique and on June 12th he published a response to all the people in the business out there including myself. In the post called "Eight points for better e-mail relationships", I'd like to point out just one little statement, that Jeffrey made:
"Having read and considered Campaign Monitor's comment and other sensible responses to my 8 June post, I agree that my brush was too broad."

So it seems that our man in the middle did realize, that he may have taken on a subject which he has not full control over just yet. Turn your attention to my "sensible response" on CampaignMonitor's blog, you also find a few comments from Mathew Patterson from Campaign Monitor as well as an actual comment-response from Mr. Zeldman himself:
"I agree with your contention. As a consequence of your comment on my site and your thoughtful post here, I've reconsidered the issue, fine-tuned my thinking, and proposed eight points that I believe you will agree with, and that might help designers, marketers, and users on both sides of the issue. Thanks for your leadership and your reasonable and helpful discourse."

Having read the June 12th article including Jeffrey’s 8 points, I can only agree with him eventhough the post contains nothing new, but repetitions of already known issues, tips and tricks. For those of you who need a little update, I’ll leave you with a link to Jeffrey Zeldman's "Eight points for better e-mail relationships".

Zeldman says: "E-mail is not a platform for design"

0 comment on this post »

Right after this catchy heading, this is his starting line: "All these years of internet use later, HTML mail still sucks"...

Not sure I would agree 100% with him on the entire content of his article, even though I usually do share many of his general thoughts on WWW and such. However, now Jeffrey Zeldman has taken on the religious battle on e-mail marketing and starts out with quite a hostile tone towards the media, saying e-mail was originally used to exchange text messages and
"e-mail works best when used for its original purpose, as the most basic of content exchange systems".

So where the web took off and quickly started growing, apparently the e-mail platform somehow stagnated, leaving us today with more CSS challenges than what's good for us?! Just to emphasize Zelman’s hostility and frank humor on the matter, allow me to quote him once more:
"Say it with me: HTML is for websites. CSS is for websites. GIFs and JPEGs are for websites. ASCII means never having to say you’re sorry."

Obviously our great master of Web Standards have forgotten the huge difference between WWW and e-mail marketing and taken on an issue, which does not seem to be based on core personal experience. The only thing I can't really argue is the personal choice between having HTML images enabled or going 100% ASCII. This is a choice made by the individual user on each individual client, but it doesn't mean we in the business can't try to influence them in our call-to-action communication. By using a few technical tricks, we can furthermore encourage the user to enable HTML and see the entire e-mail as intended.

Sorry to disappoint you Jeffrey, but some of us actually manage to send thousands of creative and alternative e-mail designs - reaching our target groups, whether it be Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail, Live, Outlook 2003-2007, Outlook Express, Lotus Notes, or Entourage for that matter. I'd be glad to send examples on CSS, HTML and general coding manners to make this "platform for design" come true. And when Eric Meyer agrees 150% with you and disables all images pr. default, that very notion is no better evidence than any other. As a matter of fact, I think IT-geeks like Meyer - whom I think it great - is not necessarily the best scale to illustrate a normal target group. We must assume that normal target groups haven’t got the same sense of technological understanding for the different media out there as Mr. Meyer has, so therefore we must take precautions and try our best to guide them through our communication - not con them!

Elmira D. #146: "I hope to get to know you"

0 comment on this post »

Sorry, but I couldn’t help myself when I received this e-mail in my inbox this morning. Somehow it managed to find its way straight to my inbox and not my junk-folder, but when reading the subject, I quickly realized the content of the e-mail.

"Aloha, my dear friend

I ask you to save this first letter from me; It doesn't matter that we
don't know each other. Maybe one day we'll read our letters to our children
an we will show them this the first letter which was the key into our happy
life. Just imagine, Dear Stranger, that you get married me, and every day
you are happy, because you are beloved, you love. I found you here and
something gave me a hint that you're as lonely as I am. and It doesn't
matter who made the fist step, do you agree with me?
It's very important that we found each other. Don't lose a chance to write
me http://lovepassionandother.com/lovecare
Maybe we'll sit together and tell our children a wonderful story about our
acquaintance in close future.

Embraces
Elmy D"

P.S. I did in fact click the above link and no harm done, but if your computer crashes, don't blame me - blame Elmira D. #146

Besides the super corny subject, the mail was also written in some of the worst English, I've ever seen, but it just made me crack up to read things like "...something gave me a hint that you're as lonely as I am" - what exactly is that something, ha ha!?

Spammers will be spammers or at least I hope this is a spam mail, otherwise I feel sorry for Elmira D. #146 :)

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007 for Wii

0 comment on this post »

I've had my Nintendo Wii since March 15th (my birthday) and I just love it and so does all my friends by the way. After too many hours of Wii Sports Golf, I needed a bit more challene and detail, so about a month ago, I bought Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007.

If you like Golf and own a Wii, you have to get it - it is so much fun and you can easily tell, that it was created by EA Sports! If don't own a Wii yet - shame on you.

The name of the URL says it all - this SWF-movie is in many ways very simple, yet very attractive and inspiring!

All you really do is click and drag in or out of a illustrative vector universe which loops infinite. Sounds weird? This creative guy has made a drawing, starting from center point and working his way out, finally ending up at where he began. Definitely go try it out! After all, it's been Digged more than 7.000 times by now...

Team Easy On just gets better each day!

0 comment on this post »

Danish only: The disaster with our old beloved Tour de France winner Bjarne Riis just keeps getting better and better. He - Bjarn Riis - admitted a few weeks ago that he did use doping back in the day, when he won the tour. Shortly after the Danish Team Easy On held a "similar" press conference, admitting the same thing! Now Kaspar Bang has made a great compilation of those two press conferences - synchronizing Team Easy On's sound with the video of Bjarne Riis admitting his crime. Good fun!

Whisper game...

At the moment, I'm involved in a personal project with 6 other guys. I only know 3 of them and I don't think they all know each other either! Basically the idea is to start up a music project. We've each been given 1 unique instrument from which we're creating a song!

The Project
So I've been giving "the keyboard" and now I have to start my own musical project including intro, verse, refrain, verse, outro etc. Meanwhile the other gyus do the same things with their given instrument and song and finally we switch songs! So now I'm presented with someone else's song with only one instrument - drums for instance - and now I'll add some keyboard to that beat. Once I'm done, I'll send that on to the next guy - get the point?

Now we have the basis for 6 different songs which we can elaborate on and add new grooves to...

The result: NO IDEA, but it'll be good fun to hear the final product of 6 too many hands stirring the pot :)

Microsoft sells its first million of Zune player!

0 comment on this post »

Personally I'm not that thrilled about the Microsoft Zune player, but it seems, that Microsoft the company finally managed to sell its first million of Zune players. From a Microsoft point of view, this should be perceived as most pleasant news, as they reach their expected sales target of June 2007.

I write "from a Microsoft point of view", because compared to guess who, one million players is really not that big a deal! Apple recently announced their 100 million iPod sell!!!
